The Solon girls gymnastics squad finished fourth during the 27-school West Geauga Sectional meet on Sunday to advance to the district competition as a team.

The Lady Comets carded a 133.4 all-around score, bested by champion Mentor, 142.675, runner-up Hudson, 140.775, and third-place Chardon, 134.125.

With their top-four team finish, the Lady Comets will have six gymnasts compete in each of the four events at the Northeast District meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 28, which also will be held at West Geauga High School.

Kenston junior Sammi Nero finished sectional runner-up on the balance beam, 8.95, third on the vault, 9.45, and 12th on the floor exercise, 9.0, to punch her ticket to the next level.

Recording top-12 finishes from West Geauga, meanwhile, were a trio of sophomores.

Also, she contributed to her team score with a squad-high 8.725 on the floor as well as a 7.5 on the beam.

The Lady Comets also had a top-12 finish from freshman Lindsay Greenberg, who placed 12th on the beam with an 8.475. She also was the Solon’s second-high scorer on the bars, 8.65, floor, 8.675, and vault, 8.425, for a 34.225 all-around score, which was 0.175 shy of a district berth.

Sophomore Gabby Mazzoli contributed to the team score on the bars, 8.575, floor, 8.575, and beam, 8.0, while freshman Megan Finnerty scored an 8.025 on the vault and a 7.525 on the bars.
