Sometimes you just have to throw all apprehension to the side and go for it.
Because Anna Sanders did that, she is one of the highest-scoring kickers in The News-Herald area this year.
She’s also likely among the highest-scoring female kickers in the state – if not THE highest-scoring.
“It’s pretty rare, no doubt about it,” said Kenston football coach Jeff Grubich.
A year ago, Sanders started her junior season as a trainer for the Kenston football team. But when both of the team’s kickers went down with injuries in the first week of the season, Sanders calmed the butterflies in her stomach and asked Grubich if it would be OK if she tried out for the vacant kicking position.
Now a senior, Sanders is the third-highest scoring kicker in The News-Herald area with 56 points. She has made 44 of 45 extra-point kicks this year, as well as four field goals.
Sanders and the Bombers will be hosting West Holmes in a Division III, Region 9 quarterfinal game on Nov. 2.
Suffice to say, Sanders is glad she worked up the nerve to go out for the team and play in such a high-profile game.
“My aunt said, ‘just go for it,'” Sanders said of her decision. “I was freaking out. She told me to go for it. I came out to practice that day and it just went from there.”
