Cleveland Indians Can Still Make the Playoffs

With just a few games left in the regular season, the Indians are still trying to fight for a wildcard spot in the playoffs. They are two games behind the Tampa Bay Rays and three behind the Oakland Athletics who are currently holding the two wildcard spots. If there ends up being a tie, then there will be a three way round robin to determine who the wildcard will be. The Indians are still in the running but they need to win the rest of their games and have Tampa Bay or Oakland to lose.

The Indians season took a bad turn with all of the injuries that occurred. Some of the most crucial injuries were ace pitcher Corey Kluber, right fielder Tyler Naquin, second baseman Jason Kipnis, and third baseman Jose Rameirez. Jose Rameirez returned with five games left in the season and had three home runs in the first two.

The Indians had a lot of people step up big throughout the season. At the beginning of the season, it was apparent that the pitching rotation could be a problem, but Mike Clevinger, Shane Bieber, Zach Plesac, and closer Brad Hand all made the pitching rotation something to be feared by other teams. Rookie center fielder Oscar Mercardo batted in the two hole most of the season producing a lot of runs for the Indians. They also acquired two sluggers Franmil Reyes and Yasiel Puig from a trade.

When Nick Grunwald was asked if he thinks the Indians still have a shot at making the playoffs, he said “I think they will be able to pull it off.”
