Kenston Swimmers Compete at Districts

On Friday, February 20, 2009, a total of 6 boys from the swim team went on to compete at Districts. They competed in a total of nine events. In addition, one girl, Jillian Herbst, competed at Districts on Saturday, February 21, 2009. The District Championships were held at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium at Cleveland State University. Qualifying for Districts is no easy task and requires lots of hard work and dedication throughout the season.

In order to qualify for Districts, swimmers must do extremely well at sectionals. For Boys Division II, you must have placed in the top 30 from every sectional meet in Northeast Ohio to qualify. For Girls Division I swimmers must place in the top 40 from every sectional meet in Northeast Ohio. This year a record number of male swimmers went on to compete at Districts.

At Districts this past Friday the boys did extremely well. Craig Puinno, Tommy Hamilton, Nicky Bester, and Ryan Astalos swam the 400 Free Relay and placed 9th overall and swam a time of 3:27.40, dropping over six seconds from their seed time of 3:33.83. Sophomore Tommy Hamilton said, “It was a good experience and I am excited for next year.” Kenston’s 200 Medley Relay team which included Jordan Alter, Ryan Astalos, Nicky Bester, and Craig Piunno placed 8th overall, with a time of 1:47.89.

Three swimmers from Kenston qualified for the 200 Freestyle: Nicky Bester, Craig Piunno, and Alex Kocheff. All three of them did extremely well and dropped massive amounts of time; Nicky Bester placed 12th out of 30 swimmers with a time of 1:52.75, Craig Piunno placed 15th with a time of 1:54.76, and Alex Kocheff placed 21st swimming a 1:57.72. Other qualifiers from Kenston included Nicky Bester in the 500 Free, Jordan Alter in the 100 Backstroke, Ryan Astalos in the 100 Breaststroke, and Alex Kocheff in the 100 Butterfly. Qualifying for States is extremely difficult and many Kenston swimmers came close at Districts this past weekend. In order to qualify for States swimmers must place in the top 3 at Districts. All the swimmers who competed at Districts did very well, and had many of their best times of the season.
