Senior John Palmer performed at the Shining Star CLE singing tournament at Cleveland Playhouse Square on Sunday.
Though he did not make it to the top four who received scholarships, he had the opportunity to sing alongside a variety of singers from different schools.
“It’s certainly been intimidating, but who doesn’t like a little intimidation every once and awhile? All of the contestants I am singing with are incredibly talented,” said John Palmer.
John Palmer chose to sing one of his favorite songs, “Rocket Man” by Elton John.
“I think I sing it really well and people seem to enjoy hearing it,” said Palmer.
In addition to the solo performances from each contestant, there were two group numbers that all of the contestants took part in. The group sang and danced to “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga and “This is Me” from the movie “The Greatest Showman.”

The top winner of the $10,000 scholarship and $2,500 dollars towards their school’s music department was Kristen Lyons from Cleveland Heights High School. She was also given the opportunity to sing with the Cleveland Orchestra.
The three runner-up winners of the competition were Calista Zajac from Magnificat, Elena Flauto from Hathaway Brown, and Zoe Douglas from North Royalton.
The Singing Star organization helps support the Montefiore Foundation which is a care home for the elderly. Shining Star has been helping support them for the past three years.
