Margin of error for state champion Bombers is gone

Are the Kenston Bombers in danger of not defending the Division III state championship they won last year?

Because of a 17-16 loss to Chardon on Oct. 11, the answer to that question is a surprising “yes.”

With the one-point loss to the Hilltoppers, which came via a 27-yard field goal by Chardon kicker Keaton Ziegenfuss with less than 10 seconds remaining, the defending Division III state champions and top-ranked Division III team in Ohio fell to 6-1 this season.

The loss dropped the Bombers to No. 5 in the Division III, Region 9 computer ratings on JoeEitel.com. Official ratings will be released early this week, but Eitel’s site is always spot-on.

So why are the 6-1 Bombers in danger of not even qualifying for the playoffs this year?

Because one more loss would put the playoff positioning in peril. The Bombers have three games remaining in the regular season — home against Madison (3-4, 2-2) Western Reserve Conference, at Riverside (4-3, 3-1 WRC) and then a colossal showdown in Week 10 against visiting Mayfield (7-0, 4-0).

None of the games are a gimme.
