For the record: Kenston is on the road here, but it’s a semi-familiar setting seeing that the Bombers played a tournament game in New Philadelphia last year en route to winning the D3 state title. The big news in this matchup is that New Philadelphia will be without regular starting QB Baron May, who broke his arm last week against Dover and is done for the season. That’s a pretty big game-changer. Kobey Hoover will likely get the nod at QB for May, who is the all-time leading passer in school history with 6,013 yards. The Quakers average 42 points per game and only 12.7 on defense. Jent Joseph has 51 catches for 842 yards and Sam Zemis 46 for 775. May also led the team with 775 rushing yards. Next is sophomore Reise Meechan with 588. … Kenston is led by two-time, first-team All-Ohio RB Jack Porter, the school’s all-time leader in rushing and scoring. QB Jon Tomcufcik has thrown for 1,862 yards and 25 touchdowns. Tyler Mintz is the area’s leading receiver with 57 catches for 1,010 yards and 12 TDs. He and Jay Middleton are scary kick returners, too. Defensively, Tim Matty leads the team in sacks and TFLs, while Logan Vargo anchors the linebackers. … The unknown here is how New Philly will operate without May at QB. Expect Kenston to try and shut down the run and then get after the quarterback in third-and-long situations.
