Val Carriero effectively summed up why a 10:40 a.m. ice slot two days after Christmas — as he and Kenston faced Dec. 27 against North Olmsted — is not exactly ideal.
“I mean, I ate a lot over Christmas,” Carriero said with a laugh. “I don’t know about everyone else.”
The Bombers’ prolific senior forward feasted a lot after Christmas as well, including one last tasty morsel against the Eagles worth savoring.
Carriero’s third-period goal capped a comeback bid for Kenston as it edged out an adventurous 5-4 win over North Olmsted during the Solon Holiday tournament at Gilmour.
The Bombers (5-9) had an opening period to forget, falling behind, 4-2, despite a 12-6 shots advantage in that period.
But behind Carriero, who had a hat trick, and fellow senior Tim Matty, who lit the lamp twice, Kenston found its way back.
“We came out kind of flat,” Carriero said. “It was an early-morning game, and I don’t want to blame it too much on the time. We hustled in the third, got our feet under us and really came out to play at the end of the game.
“It’s hard to boost people, because they’re all tired from the holidays and hanging out with their family. But we rallied in the second and third like I said. We really pushed our teammates. Me and Tim here, we strive to skate and put goals in the net.”
Matty put away a wrister at the 2-minute, 26-second mark of the second to pull Kenston within 4-3, and Carriero notched the tying goal with 37 seconds left before intermission to make it a 4-4 game.
