The Kenston Bombers varsity girls tennis team reached all five finals at the Western Reserve Conference tournament, winning the championship convincingly at the Kenston High School tennis courts.

“It was as good as it could get,” said Head Coach Torrey McNeal.

Torrey’s daughter, Brooke, a freshman, was named the conference’s Most Valuable Player and went 5-0, losing just one total game.

“With a freshman you never know 100 percent what you’re going to get,” McNeal said. “But she’s been competitive since age 8.”

Brooke has been ranked in the top 100 in the country and is the No. 1 ranked player in Ohio.

The Bombers’ second top player is Madi Davila, a sophomore. Madi moved up to second singles.

“She’s a real fighter,” McNeal said. “She’s really learned how to compete much better, and she’s beat people we expected her to beat.”

Kelsi Currington is a four-year starter. As a senior, Currington is “without a doubt, the heart and soul of our team,” McNeal said.

“She just displays great leadership,” McNeal said. “She’s really good at getting the troops rallied. She’s been great on the court, and does a great job of making sure everyone feels involved outside of the court.”

McNeal returns to a team he coached 23 years ago, replacing his mother, Diane.

McNeal has accomplished a lot in tennis but felt taking another stab at the high school team was a goal.

“Coming back home to see the program get really competitive, and taking on the top teams in the state, those were my goals.”

The other Bombers that helped win the title were Tori Scott, Katelyn Torres, Alex Ungaro, Hallie Brown and Anna Marthe.
