Kenston’s Own Become Fair Royalty

Alan Wood and Leah FineThis past weekend of August 30, was host to the 197th Great Geauga County Fair. Most people can relate to the smell of fried foods, the flashing lights, and the sounds of the Fair games and yelling of people riding the rides. Few people however, have experienced the honor of being Fair Royalty. This was the case though for two Kenston High school students this past weekend. Alan Wood (senior) and Leah Fine (senior) were voted Geauga County Fair King and Queen and will now be representatives of the county for the next year. Leah and Alan are both members of the 4-H club where kids from all different schools come together  to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills.  Leah has been a member for 10 years and has shown cows and pigs in the Fair. Alan has been a member for 5 years and has shown dairy goats and meat chickens. Leah had a sister in the Fair and followed in her footsteps to keep the family tradition.

The selection process for king and queen is more complicated than one might think. Every 4-H group must first nominate a king and queen. The person nominated must then accept the nomination and then fill out an application. The nominees then appear before a panel of three judges where they are questioned. The judges select the top 4 candidates which become the Fair Court. Then members of all groups vote for the King and Queen. Alan and Leah went through this whole process to gain the responsibility of being Fair Royalty. The King and Queen must now represent Geauga County at different events such as shows. They also must travel to other Fairs and have the job of taking pictures with all the Grand and Reserve Champions of different Fair events. Leah said, “It was very fun, I’m thankful for everyone who voted for me and I look forward to representing Geauga County.” The King and Queen also enjoyed a hot air balloon ride after being voted in. Alan said, “I’ve had a lot of fun and look forward to representing my county in the upcoming year.” Kenston’s own are Fair Royalty.
