As Trump’s term comes violently spiraling to an end, Big tech companies are starting to censor him. YouTube, citing “the ongoing potential for violence,” has removed him for at least 1 one week from the platform, just like Twitter and Facebook have done. As the nation prepares for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration next week, law enforcement officials have said there are credible threats of more acts of violence from supporters of Trump. These tech platforms are doing anything they can to stop Trump from stirring the pot up even more. Based on YouTube’s ‘Strike System’ Trump’s channel is prevented from uploading new videos or live streams for a minimum of 7 days, but this could be made longer. If Trump receives 3 strikes, his channel would be permanently terminated. A spokesperson for YouTube has also said that they have disabled all comments on Trump’s channel, indefinitely.
This is a crazy time in our lives. I don’t know if I agree with how these Big Tech companies are going about stopping Trump but then again, how else do you stop him from spreading proven lies and riling up the crowd? You could argue that this violates his first amendment right but then again, it’s their company and their Terms of Service. We will have to see how all of this will unfold on January 20th.
